Moving is stressful. Moving during the most “wonderful time of the year” is even more stressful. At a time when people look forward to celebrating and spending time with family and friends, the last thing anyone wants to do is pack boxes, clean and try to find a moving company. But sometimes, you just don’t have a choice. We can’t always pick when we need to relocate, but moving doesn’t have to ruin your holiday cheer. The following tips will help make your move a little more bearable – we promise!
Include a change of address in your holiday cards.
Why not kill two birds with one stone? If you know your new address, consider including a change of address announcement in your holiday cards. You’ll save yourself some time and money.
Plan Ahead.
Moving during the holiday season can actually be a convenient time for many because of the extra time off from work and school. If you plan ahead by packing early and scheduling your moving company with plenty of time to spare, you’ll have more than enough time to enjoy the holidays. Also, shop and ship gifts early so you don’t have that added stress as your move date gets closer.
Keep decorations to a minimum.
Put up a tree, make cookies and enjoy spending quality time together but don’t put out all the holiday regalia. It will make for less last minute packing. If you’ll be in your new home, pack some holiday decorations in a box to take with you so you can get your house festive in time for the holidays. Consider using packing boxes as decorations – stack in the shape of Christmas trees and cover with a seasonal tablecloth – although not traditional décor, it will help make all those boxes look a little more cheerful.
Donate seasonal items.
Spread goodwill to others by donating items that you don’t want to make the move with you. Warm clothes and toys are in high demand around this time of year, and you could really help to make someone’s holiday merry and bright.
Ask for a holiday discount.
Many movers are in the giving mood this time of year and are willing to show their appreciation for your business. This time of year is not usually as busy, and movers may feel more generous and agree to a discount. Added bonus: your moving date is more likely to be available but DO NOT wait until last minute to schedule.
Recycle boxes and wrapping paper.
Moving requires a lot of boxes, tape and packaging supplies. Avoid waste and save money by reusing the boxes and paper from packages you receive during the holidays. Ask friends and family for their unwanted boxes and wrapping paper as well.
Give yourself a gift by hiring a moving company.
If you think you need to do it all yourself, think again. Not only will hiring a moving company reduce stress but will allow you to focus on holiday parties and get-togethers that happen this time of year.
Moving can be stressful, but it does not mean you can’t enjoy the holidays. Plan ahead, shop early and hire a moving company, and you too can have a happy holiday season!
